How to Install an Above Ground Pool Liner (Step-by-Step Guide)

Installing a new above ground pool liner might sound like a huge project, but with the right steps and a little prep work, it’s something most pool owners can tackle on their own. Whether you’re replacing an old liner or setting up a pool for the first time, this guide will walk you through the full installation process from start to finish.

What You’ll Need

  • New pool liner (make sure it's the correct size and type)
  • Shop vac or liner vac (for removing air pockets)
  • Coping strips (for overlap liners)
  • Utility knife or scissors
  • Soft broom or pool brush
  • Dry towels or rags
  • Garden hose
  • Helper (highly recommended)

Step 1: Drain the Pool and Remove the Old Pool Liner

If you’re replacing an existing liner, start by draining the pool completely. Use a pump if needed. Once empty, remove the top rails and coping strips (for overlap liners) or the bead receiver (for beaded liners). Carefully pull out the old liner and check the pool floor and walls for damage or rust. This is a great time to fix any dents or sharp spots.

Step 2: Prep the Pool Floor

Use a broom or soft brush to clean the entire pool bottom. Smooth out sand or foam padding and remove any rocks, roots, or debris that could damage your new liner. If you're installing a new base layer, do it now and make sure it’s level.

Step 3: Position the New Pool Liner

Unbox the new liner and lay it out in the sun for about 30 minutes to help it soften and unfold. Gently place the liner inside the pool, making sure the seam lines up properly with the pool floor. For overlap liners, drape the edges over the top of the wall. For beaded liners or unibead liners, fit the liner edge into the track around the pool.

Step 4: Adjust and Smooth the Liner

Start working out wrinkles from the center of the pool toward the walls. Use a soft broom or your hands to press and smooth the liner into place. Take your time here — this step makes the biggest difference in how your liner looks and lasts.

Step 5: Use a Shop Vac to Remove Air

If you have a shop vac or liner vac, place the hose behind the liner near the skimmer opening and seal it with duct tape. Turn on the vac and watch as the liner pulls tight against the pool walls and floor. This helps eliminate air pockets and gives you a perfect fit before you start filling with water.

Step 6: Start Filling the Swimming Pool

Once the liner is in place and smooth, begin filling the pool slowly with water. Keep adjusting small wrinkles as the water rises, especially in the first few inches. Stop filling once the water reaches about 6 inches deep and reattach the top rails and coping strips if needed. Continue filling the pool until it is full.

Step 7: Trim and Clean Up

If you're using an overlap liner, trim any extra material sticking over the pool wall using scissors or a utility knife. Wipe down the liner and remove any leftover packaging, tape, or tools.

Helpful Tips for a Smooth Pool Liner Installation

  • Always double check your liner size before starting
  • Install on a warm, sunny day if possible so the liner is more flexible
  • Keep a helper with you during the liner adjustment and vacuum step
  • Use a pool pad or liner shield under the liner for extra protection

Installing an above ground pool liner is a job you can do yourself with a bit of patience and planning. The key is to take your time during the adjustment phase and use a vac if possible to get that tight, wrinkle-free finish. Once your liner is in and your pool is full, take care of it with balanced water and regular maintenance so it lasts for years to come.
