Easy to use and reliable results
I’ve been using test strips on our pool water. If I get results that are not optimal, then I would take some water to the pool store to get analyzed and receive correction steps. I was intrigued by this digital analyzer so I ordered it.It is very easy to use – put strip in water for two seconds, wait 15 seconds (the tool times it for you) then insert into the tray, press the button again and almost instant results. If the screen is hard to read in the sun, then move to the shade (duh). To test the accuracy of this tool, I compared it to the results from the 4-in-1 strips I’ve been using and the results from taking it to the pool store (Leslie’s) to be tested. Where they all tested the same item, the results were very similar. X means that test method did not test for that item. (chlorine levels are typically low in my pool because I use a solar ionizer that effectively controls the algae).Testing___4-in-1___EagleRay__PoolStoreFCL_______0_______0________.2Alk_______80-120__125______122pH_______7.8______7.9_______8CyA______40______<40_______41TCL______ X_______0________.23TH________X______236_______ XPhosphates_X_______X_______119TDS_______X_______X_______1000The tool itself works great, what was annoying is the aquadoc online account that you can sign up for (scan a QR code) to give you more information on your test results. I tried multiple times to create an account and kept getting nothing in response. Days later I looked at my emails again and there were finally some emails from aquadoc to complete the log in. I logged on, punched in my test results (the device stores all your test results) and received results and tips on how to correct to optimal levels. The downside of those instructions is that they use the names of aquadoc products to add - Aqaudoc pH Minus, Aquadoc Alkalinity Down Liquid and Calcium Increaser. All my supplies have names like Muriatic Acid, Conditioner, Hardness Plus. So you’ll have to know that Muriatic acid lowers pH and Hardness increases calcium, etc, in order to use their recommendations. For now, I’m still double checking the digital analysis and correction steps with a visit to the pool store.
Eagle Ray - A Digital Pool Chemical Tester That Works
Over the past few decades, I have struggled with pool chemical testing equipment for one reason or another...being forced to use the various techniques requiring us to crazily match up colors and in other ways when dipping/reading a 'gazillion' number of paper water testing strips. I keep asking myself…Why am I doing this? Here’s the answer. To simple try and find out if my pool's chemical mix is balanced or not. Us, as being the pool/spa persons of the house, chemically unbalanced pool/spa water will rapidly corrode the pool/spa’s plaster, the concrete, the tile grout, the metals in your pool and pump house equipment, and more! The bottom line is this...unbalanced pool/spa water is a destroyer and is extremely, extremely expensive to repair. For example, I just had my pool renovated this year and the cost was so hugely unbelievable – a money pit. Unfortunately, as hard as I tried, most of the pool damage repaired in the renovation was due in part to unbalanced pool water. Now, here's where AquaDoc's Eagle Ray digital system comes in. Finally, the Eagle Ray reader is affordable (Amazon cost - $149.00) for any of us residential pool owners looking for a digital reader. For comparison a commercial type water tester can be as much as a $1000.00 or more...yikes. AquaDoc's Eagle Ray Digital Water Resting Kit is a digital water testing strip reader that is a hand sized (6.5” X 3”) Photometer (requires three AA batteries). Dip a special Eagle Ray water test strip into the pool/spa water for 2 seconds and you’ll have a fairly accurate reading in less than a minute. The Photometer provides analysis for a pool/spa's total chlorine, total hardness, free chlorine, bromine, cyanuric acid, total alkalinity, and PH. So you know, I did have a problem with the Eagle Ray’s 7-in-1 testing strips (30 count) that came with kit. I kept getting an error for the pool’s PH reading over 10 separate tests. And, not wanting to give up on the Eagle Ray, I purchased another set of AquaDoc Eagle Ray water testing strips from Amazon, a 100-count container for $15.00. The ‘new’ strips gave me an accurate PH reading (thru 5 tests) matching my local pool store's Clear Care Expert Water Analysis System, which was free. In closing, I highly recommend taking your pool/spa water for testing to your local pool store at least once a month or more if needed (e.g. algae or other pool/spa water problem) for a comparative analysis with the Eagle Ray. Also, AquaDoc's online support was outstanding and I was offered reimbursement for the purchase of the Eagle Ray 100- count water testing strips. I am keeping the Eagle Ray!
Fairly accurate, easy to use with the app
We’re constantly battling the balance of chemicals with our in-ground pool. We got this testing kit to help fight that battle and to save us trips to the pool store to have them test the water for us (only free if you buy stuff…). It is fairly easy to use. Just submerge the test strip, insert into the reader, it draws it in and presto, you have the chemical readings, chlorine, free chlorine, ph, etc. With those readings, the kit doesn’t do much else for you. You have to go to their website and enter the result to get recommendations on what to add to the pool water. Again, easy to do and easy to understand. It comes in a convenient case to keep everything together which is also nice. A couple negatives: the screen is almost impossible to read outside in daylight. I had to bring it inside to clearly make out what the readings were. The second is the motorized slide out at the bottom. While I haven’t had any issues thus far, I have concerns about how durable it is.Other than that, it s results are fairly consistent. I pulled a reading back to back and the numbers only changed a tiny bit. Compared to what the pool store readings were, they were close enough so the directions from the app and the pool store were similar enough that I wasn’t concerned and the pool stayed balanced. Since our local pool store has started charging for readings if you aren’t buying chemicals, I’ll be able to recoup the cost within a couple seasons of use.
Not 100% accurate when compared to professional testing but better than other manual methods
I’ve been getting inconsistent results lately between my liquid and manual pool test strips so I decided to try this digital test kit in hopes to eliminate the guess work. I have a salt chlorinator pool (although the kit doesn’t specifically mention whether it’s compatible with salt pools or not) but figured I would give it a try anyways.Because of the uncertainty of my previous testing methods I chose to only test the accuracy of this machine by comparing the results against a professional pool company’s results using the same water sample. Here’s what I found:COMPARING TEST RESULTS:Total Chlorine:AquaDoc - 2.1Pro’s - 2Free Chlorine:AquaDoc - 1.9Pro’s - 2PH:AquaDoc - 8.1Pro’s - 8Alkalinity:AquaDoc - 153Pro’s - 100Hardness:AquaDoc (“total hardness”) - 183Pro’s (“calcium hardness”) - 275Stabilizer:AquaDoc (“Cyanuric Acid”) - <40Pro’s (“stabilizer”) - 40RESULTS AND ACCURACY:The biggest difference was the accuracy of the Hardness levels, followed by the Alkalinity. Keeping in mind that the professional pool company I used to compare to also used additional factors like how big my pool is, type of chlorinator and other equipment details, etc. I lean more towards the professional results being more accurate than the kit when it comes to any uncertainties. Nonetheless, this test kit has proven to be more accurate overall than my previous liquid and manual test strips when compared to the professional results. (For those who are wondering: my previous manual test strips were the Clorox Salt Pool test strips which came in 2nd most accurate, followed by my brand new HTH liquid test kit which came in 3rd most accurate.)REGARDING REFILLS:At time of ordering I was concerned whether I would be able to find the refillable test strips to use with this machine. Thankfully, I was able to find the AquaDoc test strip refills; they can be found here: https://a.co/d/0bVs3b6z The listing specifically states that they are compatible with this Eagle Ray digital test kit.OTHER FEATURES:There is a QR code in the kit that leads to their website to signup for the “SmartSplash exclusive feature” for the Eagle Ray device that gives you specific water directions and exact next steps to properly maintain your pool water chemistry based on your testing results. The website says that signup for the portal is free.I have not personally tried out the exclusive testing features so I cannot say one way or the other how easy or helpful it may be, since I prefer to use my local professional pool supply company for specific recommendations (especially with such a big difference in hardness and alkalinity results.)DOWNSIDES:One of the downsides of this digital testing machine is the screen display. The display is impossible to view when looking at it outside with sunlight and requires me to step indoors in order to read the display. However, that’s a small inconvenience for me when considering the close accuracy of this kit compared to a professional pool supply company’s results.SUMMARY:I will always recommend going to a professional pool store to get your pool water tested since that’s the best way to properly test for individual needs and setups. I also recommend comparing your own individual results with this test kit to a professional company as well before relying on it for your own personal use.I can only speak on my own experience regarding this test kit and so far I am very happy with how easy it is to use. While this digital test kit isn’t 100% perfectly accurate compared to professional testing….for me, it has still proven to be the most consistently accurate overall compared to my other DIY manual testing methods.
Digital water testing kit
This kit arrived intact and in new condition inside its own carrying case. The operator's manual appeared professionally produced. It's layout was a bit confusing initially, but once acclimated, they were very easy to read, understand and follow. The photometer feels well made. The test strips look legitimate. It seems accurate enough for home use. Would recommend.
