How to Close Your Pool for the Winter Properly

Closing your pool properly before winter is essential to prevent damage, keep the water clean, and make spring opening easier. A thorough closing process saves time and money by protecting your pool from freezing temperatures and debris.

Step 1: Clean the Pool Thoroughly

Start by removing all dirt and debris from your pool.

  • Skim the surface to remove leaves, bugs, and floating debris

  • Brush the walls and floor to loosen dirt and algae

  • Vacuum the pool manually or with an automatic cleaner

Quick Tip

Clean the pool after nearby trees drop their leaves to reduce cover debris during the winter.

Step 2: Balance the Water Chemistry

Balanced water prevents corrosion, staining, and algae growth.

  • pH: 7.2 to 7.6

  • Total Alkalinity: 80 to 120 ppm

  • Calcium Hardness: 200 to 400 ppm

Once balanced, shock the pool and add algaecide to protect water through the winter.

Step 3: Lower the Water Level

Lowering the water helps protect your skimmer and return lines from freeze damage.

  • Drain water until it is 4 to 6 inches below the skimmer

  • Use a submersible pump if your pool does not have a main drain

Step 4: Drain and Protect Pool Equipment

Freezing water can crack pipes and damage expensive equipment.

  1. Drain the pump, filter, and heater completely

  2. Remove drain plugs and store them in a safe place

  3. Blow out the lines with an air compressor or shop vac and insert winter plugs

Pro Tip

If you are unsure about blowing out lines, consider hiring a professional to avoid freeze damage.

Step 5: Remove Accessories and Install the Winter Cover

  • Take out ladders, diving boards, and removable handrails

  • Store accessories in a dry, covered area

  • Place the winter cover securely over the pool

  • Use water bags or cover clips to keep the cover tight

Optional Upgrade

Use a leaf net over your winter cover to make spring cleanup faster.

Step 6: Maintain the Pool During Winter

Even while closed, your pool needs minimal care.

  • Remove standing water and debris from the cover regularly

  • Check the water level occasionally to ensure it stays below the skimmer

  • Inspect the cover for rips or loosened straps

By following these steps, you protect your pool from winter damage and ensure a smooth and easy spring opening.
