Swimming Pool Chloramines

Swimming Pool Chloramines are compounds formed when chlorine reacts with organic matter, such as sweat, oils, and urine, in pool water. They are also known as combined chlorine.

Why are Chloramines a Problem?

  • Strong Odor: Responsible for the "chlorine smell" often associated with pools.
  • Eye and Skin Irritation: Can cause redness, itching, and discomfort for swimmers.
  • Reduced Sanitization: Indicate that free chlorine is being consumed, leaving less available to kill harmful bacteria and viruses.

How to Detect Chloramines

You can measure chloramines by testing the pool water for total chlorine and free chlorine:

  1. Use a pool test kit to measure total chlorine and free chlorine levels.
  2. Subtract free chlorine from total chlorine to determine the level of chloramines.
  3. If chloramines exceed 0.2 ppm, corrective action is needed.

How to Eliminate Chloramines

  1. Shock the Pool: Perform breakpoint chlorination by adding enough chlorine to raise free chlorine to 10 times the chloramine level.
  2. Improve Circulation: Ensure the pool pump and filtration system are operating efficiently.
  3. Encourage Hygiene: Ask swimmers to shower before entering the pool to reduce organic contaminants.

Preventing Chloramines

  • Maintain proper free chlorine levels through regular testing and adjustments.
  • Use a pool cover to minimize debris and organic matter entering the pool.
  • Encourage regular backwashing or cleaning of the filter to maintain optimal water flow.
