Pool Closing Checklist for Fall Preparation

Pool Closing Checklist for Fall Preparation

As summer fades and cooler weather sets in, it's time to shift focus from pool parties to protection. Closing your pool properly for the season helps prevent damage, saves money, and ensures a smooth reopening next spring. Follow this checklist to shut down your pool with zero stress.

1. Clean the Pool Thoroughly

Start by vacuuming the pool, brushing the walls, and skimming the surface. Remove leaves, bugs, and debris. A clean pool at closing means less mess to deal with when reopening.

2. Balance the Water Chemistry

Test your pool water and adjust the pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness. Aim for:

  • pH between 7.4 and 7.6

  • Alkalinity between 80 and 120 ppm

  • Calcium hardness between 200 and 400 ppm

Balanced water prevents staining, scale buildup, and corrosion while your pool is closed.

3. Shock the Pool

Use a chlorine or non-chlorine shock treatment to kill off bacteria, algae, and organic matter. Shocking before closing helps keep your water clearer during the off-season.

4. Add Algaecide and Winterizing Chemicals

Add a high-quality algaecide and any other winter chemicals recommended for your pool type. These treatments help fight algae and keep the water more manageable during the winter months.

5. Lower the Water Level

Lower the water to just below the skimmer or tile line, depending on your pool and cover type. This helps prevent freeze damage in colder climates.

6. Drain and Store Pool Equipment

Remove, clean, and store items like:

  • Skimmer baskets

  • Ladders and handrails

  • Pool toys and floats

  • Pool cleaner or vacuum

Also, drain water from pumps, filters, heaters, and plumbing lines if you're in a freezing area. Blow out the lines with an air compressor if needed.

7. Backwash and Clean the Filter

If you have a sand or DE filter, backwash it. For cartridge filters, rinse or soak them thoroughly. A clean filter system means fewer problems when you open in spring.

8. Install a Winter Pool Cover

Use a secure, properly fitting cover to keep debris out and help maintain water quality. Make sure the cover is tightly sealed and anchored to prevent wind damage or sagging.

9. Add an Air Pillow (For Above-Ground Pools)

Place an air pillow under the cover to protect the pool walls and reduce stress from ice expansion.

10. Monitor Until It Freezes

Check the pool periodically until freezing weather sets in. Remove leaves and water from the cover as needed to prevent sagging and extra weight.

Make Spring Opening Easier with a Strong Fall Close

Taking time to close your pool the right way protects your investment and makes life easier when warm weather returns. Stick to this checklist and your pool will be one step ahead next season.
