How to Winterize an Above-Ground Pool in 6 Steps

To winterize an above-ground pool, balance your water chemistry, shock the pool, lower the water level, blow out or drain all the lines and equipment, add a winterizing algaecide, and then put on a solid cover that fits. Do all six steps in that order and your pool will come through winter without cracked equipment, a stained liner, or a swamp waiting for you in spring. Above-ground pools are actually more vulnerable in winter than in-ground pools in a lot of ways. There is no deep end to buffer temperature swings, the liner is exposed to cold air from all sides, and the equipment is usually right there at deck level with no insulation. When should you winterize an above-ground pool?
Close your pool when your water temperature consistently stays below 60°F, not when the air temperature drops. Water at 60°F or below is cold enough to slow algae growth dramatically, which is the whole point. Closing while the water is still 70°F or warmer - even if the nights are cold - gives algae a warm, dark, covered environment to thrive in all winter. Use a thermometer, not the calendar.
Step 1: Balance your water chemistry first
Before you add any winterizing chemicals, get your baseline numbers right. Target these ranges:
- pH: 7.2 to 7.4
- Total alkalinity: 80 to 120 ppm
- Calcium hardness: 175 to 225 ppm
- Cyanuric acid (stabilizer): 30 to 50 ppm if using a trichlor-based product; 0 ppm if you're shocking with calcium hypochlorite and not worried about UV (the cover blocks light anyway)
The most common mistake here is skipping this step and going straight to the shock. If your pH is off when you add shock, you waste a big portion of its effectiveness. Fix the chemistry first, then shock.
Step 2: Shock the pool with a strong dose
Add 2 lbs of calcium hypochlorite shock per 10,000 gallons of pool water. This is a closing shock, not a maintenance dose - you want a heavy chlorine hit to kill off any algae spores and bacteria before the water sits covered for months. Run the pump for at least an hour after adding the shock to circulate it fully. Shock in the evening so UV doesn't burn off the chlorine before it can do its job. Step 3: Add a winterizing algaecide
Once the chlorine from your shock starts to drop back down (usually 24 to 48 hours after shocking), add a polyquat 60 algaecide. Use about 3 oz per 1,000 gallons. Do not add the algaecide at the same time as the shock - the high chlorine will break it down before it can do anything. A sequestrant (metal remover) is also worth adding at this stage if your fill water has iron or copper, because metals can stain a vinyl liner badly over a long, cold winter.
Step 4: Lower the water level and remove equipment
Drop the water level 4 to 6 inches below the return jets. You need that clearance so the water can expand when it freezes at the surface without pressing against fittings. Do not drain the pool completely - a vinyl liner needs water weight to hold its shape, and an empty liner left in cold air will crack and shrink.
Then remove and store your equipment:
- Turn off the pump and unplug it.
- Drain all water from the pump housing and filter tank - any water left inside will freeze and crack the housing.
- Disconnect and remove all hoses.
- Store the pump, filter, hoses, and any ladders or steps indoors - a garage or basement is fine.
- Install threaded winterizing plugs in the return jet fittings to seal the openings.
In climates that see hard freezes, there is no "maybe I'll leave the pump outside" option. A frozen pump housing is a ruined pump.
Step 5: Install a quality winter cover
A good cover is the single most important piece of winterizing gear you own. It keeps debris out, blocks sunlight that would fuel algae, and protects the water from the worst of the weather. Step 6: Do a final walkthrough before you walk away
Before you call it done for the season, run through this quick checklist:
- Cover is fully seated with no gaps or sagging sections.
- Cable or winch is tight and secure under the top rail.
- All return jet openings are plugged.
- Pump, filter, and hoses are off the pool and stored indoors.
- No standing water on top of the cover (it will become a critter hotel).
- Skimmer is either removed or has a Gizzmo-style freeze protector installed.
