What Does Vacuuming to Waste Mean?

Vacuuming to waste bypasses your filter entirely, sending dirty water directly out of your pool and down the drain. This method is particularly useful when dealing with excessive debris, dead algae, or fine particles that would otherwise clog your filter.

Can You Vacuum to Waste with a DE Filter?

Unlike sand or cartridge filters that often have a dedicated 'waste' setting on a multiport valve, DE filters can be a bit trickier. Many DE filters use push-pull (piston) backwash valves, which don’t have a waste setting. However, you can still vacuum to waste by slightly adjusting your system.

How to Vacuum to Waste with a DE Filter

If your DE filter has a multiport valve, follow these steps:

Turn Off the Pump – Always turn off the pump before making any valve adjustments.
Set the Multiport Valve to ‘Waste’ – This diverts the vacuumed water out of the pool without passing through the DE filter.
Attach the Vacuum – Connect your pool vacuum to the skimmer and prime the vacuum hose.
Turn the Pump On – Start vacuuming as usual, but keep an eye on the water level. Since you’re removing water, the pool will drain faster than normal.
Refill as Needed – Keep a hose running in the pool to maintain water levels.
Return the Valve to ‘Filter’ – Once done, turn off the pump and return the valve to ‘Filter’ mode.
Recharge the DE Filter – Since some DE powder may have been lost, add the appropriate amount of DE through the skimmer.

If your DE filter has a push-pull valve (backwash piston) and no waste setting, try these workarounds:

Use the Drain Plug – Some pools have a spigot or hose adapter for draining water. Attach a waste hose and direct water away from the pool area.
Partially Open the Backwash Valve – This can allow water to bypass the filter while still vacuuming, though it may not be as effective as a true waste setting.
Use a Sump Pump – If no waste option exists, manually vacuum debris into a separate containment area using a submersible pump.

When Should You Vacuum to Waste?

After shocking the pool to remove dead algae.
When dealing with fine debris that clouds the water.
After a major storm that introduces dirt and leaves.
If battling high levels of phosphates or flocculants that settle to the bottom.

Vacuuming to waste is a powerful tool in pool maintenance, but it does require mindful water management. If your DE filter doesn’t have a direct waste setting, consider alternative methods like draining from the pump or using a sump pump. And remember, after vacuuming to waste, always top off your pool’s water level and rebalance the chemicals.
