If your hot tub water looks cloudy, don’t worry, it’s one of the most common issues spa owners face. The good news? It’s usually caused by something simple like water balance, filtration, or buildup. Once you identify the cause, clearing it up is quick and easy.
Check Your Water Balance
When your pH or total alkalinity drift out of range, your sanitizer can’t do its job properly. That allows tiny particles to hang in the water, making it look dull or hazy. Use test strips to check your chemistry and aim for:
pH between 7.2 and 7.8
Total alkalinity between 80 and 120 ppm
If your levels are off, adjust them with a pH increaser or decreaser and retest. Clear water starts with balanced water.
Clean or Replace Your Filters
Dirty or clogged filters are a top cause of cloudy spa water. Oils, lotion, and debris can build up and block proper flow, sending dirt right back into the tub. To fix it:
Remove and rinse your filter with a garden hose once a week.
Deep clean it monthly with a filter cleaner.
Replace it if it still looks stained or worn.
A clean filter keeps your water sparkling and your jets strong.
Keep Sanitizer Levels Steady
Low sanitizer (chlorine or bromine) allows bacteria to multiply in warm water, quickly turning it cloudy. Test your sanitizer before each use and top it up if needed. If the water smells musty or looks dull, add a shock treatment to kill bacteria and restore clarity fast.
Watch What Gets Into the Water
Personal care products are sneaky cloud-makers. Lotions, hair products, sunscreen, and even laundry detergent from swimsuits can mix with hot water and leave residue. To prevent that:
Ask everyone to rinse off before using the spa.
Add a clarifier or enzyme treatment occasionally to break down oils and buildup.
These small habits make a big difference in long-term water clarity.
Check Circulation and Water Age
If you’ve done everything right and your water is still cloudy, check how long your pump runs each day. Your spa needs at least four hours of filtration daily to stay clean. Also, don’t forget to drain and refill every 3–4 months. Over time, minerals and contaminants build up in the water and can’t be fully filtered out, making it impossible to stay clear.
Don’t Forget About Hard Water or Metals
If your cloudy water looks milky or slightly tinted, metals like iron or copper could be the culprit. Use a metal sequestering agent to bind those minerals, or treat your fill water next time you drain and refill the spa.
