Is It Safe to Use Baking Soda in a Hot Tub?

If you’ve ever wondered whether baking soda belongs in your hot tub, the answer is yes—when used correctly. Baking soda is a common and safe way to maintain water balance and ensure your spa stays clear and comfortable.

How Baking Soda Helps

Baking soda is primarily used to raise total alkalinity, which stabilizes pH. When alkalinity is in the proper range:

  • pH swings are minimized

  • Sanitizer works more effectively

  • Water stays clear and balanced

Tip: Stable alkalinity makes it much easier to maintain overall water quality.

How to Use Baking Soda Safely

Even though baking soda is gentle, it should be added gradually:

  1. Start with about 1 tablespoon per 100 gallons of water

  2. Add it slowly while the jets are running to circulate

  3. Wait 15–30 minutes and retest before adding more

Adding too much at once can raise alkalinity excessively, causing cloudy water or scale buildup.

What Baking Soda Can’t Do

Baking soda is not a substitute for pH adjustments. If your pH is low, you’ll need a dedicated pH increaser, like sodium carbonate, to correct it. Baking soda’s main role is to support alkalinity, which indirectly helps pH stability.
