A diatomaceous earth pool filter, or DE filter, removes particles as small as 3 to 5 microns from your pool water. That's significantly finer than sand filters can achieve. The main cost difference between DE pool filters and other types is DE powder consumption. You'll add powder weekly during swimming season, and do a full grid cleaning every 1 to 2 years. Total annual powder cost for a residential pool is typically $80 to $150. Compare that to replacing sand every 5 years (usually $200 to $400) or cartridges annually ($100 to $250), and DE filters often come out competitive when you factor in longevity.

Inspect grids every 2 to 3 years for cracks or thinning coating. A cracked grid lets fine particles escape, defeating the point of a DE filter. Grid replacement kits run $200 to $600 depending on tank size. This is still cheaper than constant cartridge replacement for large pools.
