How to Test Pool Water After Heavy Storms

How to Test Pool Water After Heavy Storms

Heavy storms can wreak havoc on your pool’s water chemistry, introducing debris, contaminants, and rainwater that upset its delicate balance. Knowing how to test and treat your pool after a storm is key to restoring its safety and cleanliness. Here’s a step-by-step guide to ensure your pool water is back to optimal condition.

1. Remove Debris First

Before testing, skim the surface and clean out the pool skimmer and pump basket. Large debris, such as leaves and twigs, can affect water circulation and skew your test results. Once the pool is free from visible debris, you’re ready to move on to water testing.

2. Test for Chlorine Levels

Stormwater often dilutes chlorine levels, reducing your pool’s ability to sanitize effectively. Use the Eagle Ray Digital Water Testing Kit to measure free chlorine and total chlorine levels. If levels are low, shock your pool to restore its sanitizing power.

3. Check pH and Alkalinity

Rainwater typically has a low pH, which can lead to acidic conditions in your pool. Test for both pH and alkalinity and aim for the following ranges:

  • pH: 7.2–7.6
  • Alkalinity: 80–120 ppm

Adjust as needed using pH increaser or decreaser and alkalinity boosters.

4. Inspect Calcium Hardness and TDS Levels

Heavy rain can also dilute calcium hardness, causing potential damage to your pool's surfaces. Check calcium levels and ensure they’re within the ideal range of 200–400 ppm. Additionally, test total dissolved solids (TDS) to identify contaminants introduced by stormwater.

5. Shock and Circulate

Once your water chemistry is balanced, shock your pool to eliminate bacteria and organic contaminants brought in by the storm. Run your pool pump for at least 24 hours to circulate the water and distribute chemicals evenly.

6. Test Again for Assurance

After shocking and circulating, retest your pool water to confirm balanced levels. This final step ensures your pool is safe and ready for use.
