What’s the Best Way to Balance Hot Tub Water?

If your hot tub water ever feels off, looks cloudy, or irritates your skin, chances are the water chemistry is out of balance. Properly balanced water keeps your spa clear, comfortable, and safe while helping your equipment last longer and your sanitizer work the way it should.

Start With Proper Water Testing

The best way to balance hot tub water always starts with testing. Use a reliable test strip or digital tester and focus on three core readings:

  • pH: 7.2–7.8

  • Total Alkalinity: 80–120 ppm

  • Sanitizer: Follow the recommended range for chlorine, bromine, or salt systems

Testing first prevents guesswork and chemical overcorrection.

Adjust Total Alkalinity First

Alkalinity acts as a buffer for pH, so it should always be adjusted before anything else. When alkalinity is too low, pH swings quickly. When it’s too high, pH becomes difficult to control.

  • Use sodium bicarbonate to raise alkalinity

  • Use muriatic acid or sodium bisulfate to lower it

Add chemicals in small doses, run the circulation for 15–30 minutes, and retest before adding more.

Balance pH for Comfort and Stability

Once alkalinity is in range, adjust your pH if needed.

  • Low pH: add a pH increaser like sodium carbonate

  • High pH: add a pH reducer

Balancing pH after alkalinity adjustments keeps your water stable and prevents scale, corrosion, and irritation.

Maintain Proper Sanitizer Levels

Sanitizer keeps bacteria and organic contaminants under control. Low sanitizer can quickly lead to cloudy water and odors.

  • Keep sanitizer within the recommended range for your system

  • Shock the water regularly to break down oils and buildup sanitizer alone can’t handle

Consistent sanitation is just as important as balanced pH and alkalinity.
