Simple Hot Tub Startup Guide for New Owners

Getting your first hot tub is exciting, but knowing how to start it up correctly is essential for safety and enjoyment. Proper setup ensures clean water, efficient operation, and a longer lifespan for your spa. This step-by-step guide will help new owners handle their hot tub with confidence.

Step 1: Choose the Right Location

Before filling your spa, make sure it is placed correctly:

  • Pick a flat, stable surface that can support the spa’s weight

  • Ensure easy access to electrical outlets and water supply

  • Keep the spa away from overhanging trees to avoid excess debris

Choosing the right location prevents future maintenance headaches and improves safety.

Step 2: Inspect and Prepare the Spa

Check your hot tub thoroughly before the first fill:

  • Remove the cover and inspect the shell for damage

  • Verify that the drain valve is closed

  • Ensure all fittings, filters, and jets are securely in place

Taking a few minutes to inspect the spa can prevent leaks and setup issues.

Step 3: Fill the Hot Tub with Water

  1. Insert a garden hose into the filter compartment to fill through the filter line

  2. Fill until the water reaches the recommended level, usually above the jets

  3. Avoid overfilling to prevent overflow when entering the spa

Quick Tip

Using a hose filter reduces minerals and debris, making water balancing easier.

Step 4: Power On and Check the System

  • Once filled, turn on the power or reset the breaker

  • Allow the hot tub to run through a priming cycle to remove air from the lines

  • Check for leaks or unusual noises before continuing

Step 5: Heat the Water to the Right Temperature

Set your hot tub to the desired temperature:

  • Most users prefer 100–104°F for comfort

  • Allow 12–24 hours for the spa to reach the set temperature

Heating before adding chemicals ensures they dissolve and circulate properly.

Step 6: Balance Water Chemistry

Proper water balance keeps your hot tub safe and clear.

  • Test Water: Use a reliable test kit for pH, alkalinity, and sanitizer levels

  • Adjust Levels: Aim for pH 7.2–7.6 and alkalinity 80–120 ppm

  • Add Sanitizer: Use chlorine or bromine according to the manufacturer’s instructions

Startup Chemical Checklist

  • pH increaser or decreaser

  • Alkalinity increaser

  • Chlorine or bromine tablets or granules

  • Shock treatment for initial sanitation

Step 7: Run the Pump and Circulate Water

Circulation helps distribute chemicals and maintain clear water.

  • Run the pump for 30 minutes after adding chemicals

  • Leave the cover open during the initial shock treatment to release gases

Step 8: Routine Checks and Maintenance

To keep your new hot tub in excellent condition:

  • Test water 2–3 times per week

  • Clean filters monthly and replace as needed

  • Keep the cover on when not in use to retain heat and block debris

By following these steps, new hot tub owners can enjoy a clean, safe, and relaxing soak from the very first day.
