6 Tips for Keeping Your Hot Tub Cover Bacteria Free

Your hot tub cover works hard. It keeps the water clean, holds in heat, and protects your tub from dirt and debris. But if you’re not giving it the attention it deserves, it can quickly become a breeding ground for bacteria. A dirty hot tub cover not only smells bad, but it can also introduce unwanted germs into your spa. Keeping it clean doesn’t have to be complicated.

Here are six simple tips to keep your hot tub cover fresh and bacteria-free.

Clean the Underside Regularly

The underside of your hot tub cover is constantly exposed to moisture, making it the perfect spot for mold and bacteria to grow. I learned this the hard way when I noticed a musty smell every time I lifted my cover. Now, I make it a habit to clean the underside once a month using a gentle cleaner. Just spray it down, wipe it with a microfiber cloth, and let it air dry before putting it back on.

Don’t Forget the Top

While the top of your cover doesn’t come into contact with water, it still collects dirt, leaves, and other debris. I usually give it a quick wipe-down every week to prevent buildup. A friend of mine uses a garden hose to rinse hers off, which works great if you’ve got extra grime after a storm.

To protect the top from UV damage and wear, you might also consider using a hot tub cover protectant. It’ll keep the material from cracking and make cleaning even easier.

Keep It Dry

Bacteria love moisture, so keeping your hot tub cover dry is one of the best ways to prevent them from thriving. After heavy rains or long soaks, take a minute to wipe down the cover and remove any standing water. I made the mistake of leaving mine damp once, and within a week, I had spots of mildew that were a pain to clean.

Use a Non-Abrasive Cleaner

Not all cleaners are created equal. Using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials can damage your cover and make it less effective over time. Stick to products designed for hot tubs or mild soap mixed with warm water. I once used a random household cleaner, and while it smelled great, it left streaks that wouldn’t come off.

Store It Properly

If you ever need to remove your cover for an extended period, store it in a dry, shaded area. One summer, I left mine leaning against the fence, and by the time I needed it again, the sun had warped the edges. A proper storage solution will save you time and money in the long run.

Let It Air Out

Even if you clean your cover regularly, it’s a good idea to let it air out every so often. On sunny days, I like to prop mine up for an hour or two to dry completely. This simple step goes a long way in keeping odors and bacteria at bay.

Letting the cover air out is such a simple tip but one I never thought of. I tried it last weekend, and it really did help with that musty smell. Anyone else have a go-to cleaner they swear by?

Keeping it dry makes such a difference. I used to ignore standing water on my cover until mildew started showing up—it was awful to clean. Now I always wipe it down after it rains. Also, does anyone recommend a good protectant for UV damage? I’ve been meaning to try one.

I never thought about cleaning the underside! How often do you all do it?
